Rose of Versailles Anime, Part 1, Disk 3 (English)

The third disk of part 1 of Ryoko Ikeda's =AAARRRRGHHH.

If you had asked me what my impression of the Rose of Versailles anime was before the new release, I would have said that it was "good, but hard to watch." Disk 3 is a perfect embodiment of why.

All about pre-1997ish anime

Like I usually do, I ranted on reddit a lot yesterday. Except this time, it was suggesting a lot of classic anime to some dude who wanted classic anime suggestions. Since I couldn't just let that fall into the aether of reddit, like everything does, I wanted to post it here. And since I have no pretense of professionalism, it's fine with me. Even if I did have a pretense of professionalism, it's since gone from my old and poorly written posts.

Without further ado:

The Rose of Versailles Giveaway and The Case of the Missing Interview

It still feels a little unreal to have legally on DVD as well as in English. It was one of the last big White Whale titles still out there. As a seminal work in shojo, as well as anime in general, it is an important title for anyone interested in the history of the medium. It has shaped countless titles since its release and become a fixture in consciousness of fandom. If you aren't interested in the history of the medium, it is still a damn good show.

For the poor uneducated and unfortunate souls who have not watched this series yet, we have a chance for them to correct that error. All you have to do is answer a simple question for a chance to win.

2004, Part 2: Respectful, Yet Rebellious

Over 130 new anime shows debuted in 2004 on Japanese television, a number in magnitude that would be the norm for the next decade. Naturally, George J. Horvath from needed just a little more space for his coverage on what shows made 2004 what it was. If you need a refresher on the first half, click .It could have been easy to give a simple mention of each of these titles and get this year covered in one post, but as the essay titles indicated this year had to be covered in more detail, respecting the reader and the blog while also bucking tradition and giving more. Luckily, the latter half of 2004 felt the same way...

Being a visual medium anime has to do something to really catch viewers' interests at times and while the year had a few worthy contenders, like Windy Tales and Tweeny Witches, no anime from 2004 did that as well as GANKUTSUOU-THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Based on the legendary novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Gonzo took the story and put it a new spin on it, while also giving the entire show a look that, to this day, is still one-of-a-kind.

The Weekly Backlog

After a week of being unproductive (anime-wise, at least), I got back on track this weekend. Sometimes I have a habit of not doing the things I like and want to do an instead do things that require no thought or concentration. I really hate it when I do that too much.

GOAL: FINISH WATCHING BROTHER, DEAR BROTHER

1997: Take My Evolution

Eric McLeod (@) didn't really know what anime was until high school. His only anime before that point were Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, but after discovering shows like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, he decided to give this thing called anime a try. He is currently the editor of anime content at , where he blogs about the current anime season, and is working to become a history teacher when he's not bemoaning the anime fandom on Twitter.1997 is a prime example of the adage "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

Many franchises would be born, die, or take a break in 1997. Magical-girl shows were still selling like hot cakes, super robot shows still had a footing in the market, and a little series about taming magical monsters would become one of the biggest things in the world. However, there was a noticeable shift in the content of TV anime this year, and that shift owes Neon Genesis Evangelion a favor.

Sunday Morning Anime 1

I intended to go for my 12-mile run this morning before work. Mother Nature had other plans and scheduled a nice thunderstorm instead. So, I figured I'd get my Sunday dose of anime while waiting for the storms to clear and work to start.

This post will encapsulate three series that I've watched. Two of them I watched this morning (Bubblegum Crisis and The Rose of Versailles) and the other I watched earlier in the week (Appleseed XIII). First, some quick information about the series I am watching:

Anime Mondays #26

It's been a pretty quiet month concerning anime.I just haven't had a whole lot of time at all to plow through anything. And if I don't have at least three shows to talk about, I'll hold it over for a week. This weekend, I went to visit some of my buddies up in Detroit (a good four hours away) and it was like being on another planet.Or, at least in South Jersey.Michigan lefts?Oh, no, those are Jersey U-turns.But driving woes aside, it was an awesome time.Plus, we went to the cupcake store.I pretty much want to live there.

AnimeNEXT 2013: Guests

It is so nice to be able to have a whole section on guests for again. I missed being able to see people like or and not have to go several states over and spend lots of money I don't have. This year and were a special treat. two major directorial credits are and which are both extremely nice bullet points to have on your CV. She has also storyboarded some extremely visually inventive animation like both openings to and the ending. on the other hand has been a key animator on more anime than some fans have ever seen in their lives. He was also apparently the voice actor of Duke Todo (whom I guess is a parody) in the .

At the same time on the American front I am sure several people I know were super sad that they were not able to attend a convention where was a guest. Lets put it this way: As people are getting their panels rejected left and right for Otakon more often than a case of Near Beer at Oktoberfest it seems that Mike Toole had his panels auto-accepted as soon as they were submitted. I think that fairly well sums up his status as a respected commentator on anime.

About lists

There's a forum I'm in that was discussing someone's top 10 anime list. I've seen a lot and it's quite difficult to narrow the expansive library of what I've seen down to 10 titles. There's a lot of good out there, and a lot of not so good. Like any list, things will get left out that you'll want to include. It's almost inevitable.

So instead of doing a total top 10 list, I'll be doing top lists by genre. I won't limit to a specific number since some things just don't need to be listed and others probably need some attention. Within the lists are no specific order since it's just really hard to pick one over another because they might have a general theme related, but not necessarily the same overall feel.
