Rose of Versailles Anime, Part 2, Disk 1 (English) and a Contest

begins with an extremely low point, from which everything will flow downhill until the very end. We are launched into the which contributed strongly to the already bad feelings both the people and the nobility had for the Royal Family.

Jean Valois, her husband Nicholas de la Motte and Cardinal Rohan are all real people involved in the affair, as were theprostitute Nicole Lequay d'Oliva and forger R taux de Villette. Jean did have a sister, but her name was not Rosalie. And, while rumors were supposedly to have been circulated of lesbianism between the Queen and her favorites, those were later, some even after the revolution began. She was accused of the double crime of lesbianism, in fact, with a notorious British lesbian - as if the French ones might not have been good enough. But, then, she was also accused of sleeping with every man in France, including her own sons. . But this anime works very hard to make sure we find her sympathetic, Rohan is a letch, Jean and Nichiolas are sociopaths, Marie just wants time with her family, she's not a bad person, just tone-deaf to well, everything.

The Weekly Backlog

As the fall anime season wraps up, I've felt myself feeling more and more disconnected and wishing that I hadn't skipped out on the entire season. It certainly means that I'll be following shows next season (in part due to this disconnection, but more so because I'm pretty excited about several series this winter) but now I'm try to see just how much of the fall season I can sneak in before the end of the year-while at the same time hacking away at my manga backlog. It's a good thing I am fortunate enough to have a full-time job with excellent time off benefits. I've got nearly 2 weeks in front of me with no plans in sight.

But Griffith seems to have a different perspective on friendship. Feeling unappreciated, Guts leaves Griffith and the group to seek out his destiny. What follows is a poignant tale of loss and betrayal. While watching the relationship between Guts, Griffith and Casca unfold, my emotions ran the gamut. In the end, I was left speechless. Berserk starts off choppy, and the ending is unfinished. However, its profound impact destroys any negatives.

12 Days: #10 The Leijiverse and becoming an oldfag

I first waded into the Leijiverse last year with the short anime Ozuma (which I disliked very much) and the film Arcadia of My Youth. This year, especially with Yamato 2199, I encouraged myself to delve into these vast and daunting sub-universes even further.

Of all of the big franchises and meta-series, I think the Leijiverse was the most intimidating. It took me a while to learn what characters were linked to others and which series were completely separate from others. (Captain Harlock, Queen Emeraldas, Galaxy Express 999 and Maetel Legend are all connected. Yamato is its own thing.) Naturally I didn't watch everything in the optimal order, but the pieces were certainly not difficult to put together.

Anime Mondays #37

So I've been thinking more and more lately about turning these blog posts into youtube videos. My problem?I don't want to edit them.In fact, I dropped out of film school because I hated editing so much. This is the issue when you're a perfectionist, and every single second of film has to be exactly what I want, or I scrap the whole thing. It would take me two months to post a freaking review.Anyone want to be my editor?I have a nice camera.I have a good microphone.I even have lighting.I just don't want to clip and piece things together.Oh well.Something to think about for next week.

Magazine Monday: Maquia October 2013

I tend to cycle between the 'big three' Japanese beauty magazines: Biteki, usually my favourite, has been leaving me rather cold of late, and I feel like my usual second choice Voce has been seriously skimping on makeup content in favour of skincare, clothes and sleb blather lately. So this month I plumped for Maquia for a change, and while its business is still very much brown as usual, I found myself appreciating its attention to those neutral details -- perhaps simply because I hadn't cracked an issue for a while :P

This issue came with a deluxe Obagi cream sample pot, and included booklets on sweet new season hairstyles and new foundation releases. Because I love charts (so redolent of SCIENCE!) here are two representative ones:

Sketch Fest #43 Oct. 25 ~ 27, 2013

I think my record for the pieces done during Sketch Fest previously was 9.I broke that by 1 this weekend. :DMost of the pieces were ACEOs and all were small pieces with the largest being 4" x 6".Still, I have to feel pretty good about it since a lot of other artists seemed to be complaining about art block, etc.

I scribbled, inked, and painted on all 3 days of the weekend, starting with this super adorable sweetness to a prompt "It's So Fluffy".

2008: A Briton's Guide to Anime

@ writes manga reviews and features for , anime and manga reviews for , and a "Beginner's Guide to Anime" for . He has a degree in Media Studies from Teesside University, where his love of anime really flourished. He also works for his local anime convention, in Middlesbrough. His main ambition is to boost the reputation of anime in Britain, which is not always good in the eyes of the media and general public. In this article, I will be mainly be talking about the anime industry in the United Kingdom, but for those of you from outside of the UK, don't worry; there will still be plenty of interest. Plenty of anime will be covered--some fantasy, some sci-fi, some historical and some romantic.

The thing people have to understand about anime in the UK, however, is that it has never really had a good reputation. This first occurred with the video release of the tentacle-rape themed Urotsukid ji: Legend of the Overfiend back in the 1990s. When it came out, the newspapers attacked it, saying how horrible and violent Japanese cartoons were, as all cartoons for the British were for kids. Attacks came from both the left-wing and right-wing presses. However, in the end the moral panic it stirred up backfired, as Urotsukid ji accidentally received all this free publicity in a country where the anime market at the time was very small. Sales of the video boomed.

Two Important and Must-Be-Watched Anime Series

I'm sure many of you have that anime series that is fond to you and which you always come back to watch when you want to watch something interesting, fun and memorable. In the case of the two series I'm about to mention have the distinction of being two of the more admired between the anime fans on anime's history.

The first one I want to recommend you is Versailles no Bara which is translated as The Rose of Versailles and is also know by the arternative name of Lady Oscar. This 40 episode series has a dramatic and epic story in which we follow the story of a woman called Oscar who gets that name because of her father's wish to have a boy that continues with the family's tradition of becoming a royal guard in France before the revolution. With this introduction we watch a great story in which we watch the troubles that Oscar and her beloved and admired people face, many dramatic situations when fullfiling Oscar with her duty as a royal guar or doing what is right and honest for the people besides that she can't do some things as a woman that she wishes. And to add more interest on the story all of this is mixed with the political deceptions and conflicts in which Oscar gets involved due to her close relation with the royal family and more when these are the times before the French Revolution having a fiction story on the site of the historic happenings. In addition to all that I described the illustration on the style of it's time it's very fitting with the story being relevant the role of the director Osamu Dezaki creating his distinctive sequences of dramatic illustrations wher the color, expressions and background play an important part in the emotion of many moments.

Viki Acquired by Rakuten Internet Services

The Japanese Internet services company Rakuten has announced that it has acquired the global streaming platform Viki. Rakuten did not disclose the terms of the deal; however the All Things D website cited anonymous sources that Viki was acquired for US$200 million.

Viki launched in December 2010, and it uses crowd-sourcing from its community users to create subtitles for its video content in different languages. Viki began streaming anime in 2012, and the anime streams that the site has provided have included Ozma, Black Jack, Astro Boy, and The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion. Viki also collaborated with Right Stuf International to license The Rose of Versailles television anime series.

Five Anime Productions that Never Saw the Light of Day

There is no questioning the ever growing appeal of anime in the West. The medium was popularized not only due to audiences being curious about , but also due to the combined talents of pioneers such as Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki, Rintaro, Shinichiro Watanabe, and Hideaki Anno, just to name a few. However, as with the case of , some projects by famous directors never made it past the drawing boards or were put on indefinite hiatus. Producing high quality animation is certainly not cheap. Below is a small glimpse at what could have been.

The Beginner's Guide to Anime, No. 18

This week's column covers what has to be one of the most popular and influential anime series made, but unfortunately it is relatively unknown in English speaking nations. The series has only just been given a release this year and only in Region 1, and the original manga has never been given a proper English release.

This is a tragedy because The Rose of Versailles, animated between 1979-80, is one of the greatest and most important anime series made. It was one of the first manga made for girls (shojo manga) that was actually made by a woman. The original manga has been constantly in print since it was created in 1972-73, and it features the first "bed scene" in any manga. Not only that but it was still able to produce a great series even after the original director died about half-way through the series.

The Rose of Versailles

A French nobleman from the 18th century, sick of having daughter after daughter, decides that having one more daughter is the last straw. "I will raise her as a boy!" he announces to the cosmos. That is the beginning of the Japanese anime The Rose of Versailles.

Meet Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, a career woman in a man's world during the 18th century, the personal guard of Marie Antoinette and the royal family. Most know she's a girl, but find her confused sexuality appealing and a little attractive. Both the men and women of the French court fawn over her, but she is mostly interested in her career and serving those under her charge.

Please Get Loud When the Piano Gets Loud: Otakon 2013

This year's Otakon was its 20th anniversary, and as expected of the staff they brought out the big guns, with names such as Watanabe Shinichirou, Kanno Yohko, and Seki Tomokazu. As with every year, one of the biggest strengths and weaknesses of Otakon is that there's too much to do, and it leaves me feeling both satisfied and a bit disappointed.

For one thing, I didn't get to see the Space Dandy trailer.

Rose of Versailles Anime, Part 1, Disk 3 (English)

The third disk of part 1 of Ryoko Ikeda's =AAARRRRGHHH.

If you had asked me what my impression of the Rose of Versailles anime was before the new release, I would have said that it was "good, but hard to watch." Disk 3 is a perfect embodiment of why.

All about pre-1997ish anime

Like I usually do, I ranted on reddit a lot yesterday. Except this time, it was suggesting a lot of classic anime to some dude who wanted classic anime suggestions. Since I couldn't just let that fall into the aether of reddit, like everything does, I wanted to post it here. And since I have no pretense of professionalism, it's fine with me. Even if I did have a pretense of professionalism, it's since gone from my old and poorly written posts.

The Rose of Versailles Giveaway and The Case of the Missing Interview

It still feels a little unreal to have legally on DVD as well as in English. It was one of the last big White Whale titles still out there. As a seminal work in shojo, as well as anime in general, it is an important title for anyone interested in the history of the medium. It has shaped countless titles since its release and become a fixture in consciousness of fandom. If you aren't interested in the history of the medium, it is still a damn good show.

For the poor uneducated and unfortunate souls who have not watched this series yet, we have a chance for them to correct that error. All you have to do is answer a simple question for a chance to win.

2004, Part 2: Respectful, Yet Rebellious

Over 130 new anime shows debuted in 2004 on Japanese television, a number in magnitude that would be the norm for the next decade. Naturally, George J. Horvath from needed just a little more space for his coverage on what shows made 2004 what it was. If you need a refresher on the first half, click .It could have been easy to give a simple mention of each of these titles and get this year covered in one post, but as the essay titles indicated this year had to be covered in more detail, respecting the reader and the blog while also bucking tradition and giving more. Luckily, the latter half of 2004 felt the same way...

Being a visual medium anime has to do something to really catch viewers' interests at times and while the year had a few worthy contenders, like Windy Tales and Tweeny Witches, no anime from 2004 did that as well as GANKUTSUOU-THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Based on the legendary novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Gonzo took the story and put it a new spin on it, while also giving the entire show a look that, to this day, is still one-of-a-kind.

The Weekly Backlog

After a week of being unproductive (anime-wise, at least), I got back on track this weekend. Sometimes I have a habit of not doing the things I like and want to do an instead do things that require no thought or concentration. I really hate it when I do that too much.

GOAL: FINISH WATCHING BROTHER, DEAR BROTHER

1997: Take My Evolution

Eric McLeod (@) didn't really know what anime was until high school. His only anime before that point were Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, but after discovering shows like Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, he decided to give this thing called anime a try. He is currently the editor of anime content at , where he blogs about the current anime season, and is working to become a history teacher when he's not bemoaning the anime fandom on Twitter.1997 is a prime example of the adage "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

Many franchises would be born, die, or take a break in 1997. Magical-girl shows were still selling like hot cakes, super robot shows still had a footing in the market, and a little series about taming magical monsters would become one of the biggest things in the world. However, there was a noticeable shift in the content of TV anime this year, and that shift owes Neon Genesis Evangelion a favor.

Sunday Morning Anime 1

I intended to go for my 12-mile run this morning before work. Mother Nature had other plans and scheduled a nice thunderstorm instead. So, I figured I'd get my Sunday dose of anime while waiting for the storms to clear and work to start.

This post will encapsulate three series that I've watched. Two of them I watched this morning (Bubblegum Crisis and The Rose of Versailles) and the other I watched earlier in the week (Appleseed XIII). First, some quick information about the series I am watching:

Anime Mondays #26

It's been a pretty quiet month concerning anime.I just haven't had a whole lot of time at all to plow through anything. And if I don't have at least three shows to talk about, I'll hold it over for a week. This weekend, I went to visit some of my buddies up in Detroit (a good four hours away) and it was like being on another planet.Or, at least in South Jersey.Michigan lefts?Oh, no, those are Jersey U-turns.But driving woes aside, it was an awesome time.Plus, we went to the cupcake store.I pretty much want to live there.

All images are from , and there are spoilers listed up to the episodes below!

It is so nice to be able to have a whole section on guests for again. I missed being able to see people like or and not have to go several states over and spend lots of money I don't have. This year and were a special treat. two major directorial credits are and which are both extremely nice bullet points to have on your CV. She has also storyboarded some extremely visually inventive animation like both openings to and the ending. on the other hand has been a key animator on more anime than some fans have ever seen in their lives. He was also apparently the voice actor of Duke Todo (whom I guess is a parody) in the .

At the same time on the American front I am sure several people I know were super sad that they were not able to attend a convention where was a guest. Lets put it this way: As people are getting their panels rejected left and right for Otakon more often than a case of Near Beer at Oktoberfest it seems that Mike Toole had his panels auto-accepted as soon as they were submitted. I think that fairly well sums up his status as a respected commentator on anime.

About lists

There's a forum I'm in that was discussing someone's top 10 anime list. I've seen a lot and it's quite difficult to narrow the expansive library of what I've seen down to 10 titles. There's a lot of good out there, and a lot of not so good. Like any list, things will get left out that you'll want to include. It's almost inevitable.

So instead of doing a total top 10 list, I'll be doing top lists by genre. I won't limit to a specific number since some things just don't need to be listed and others probably need some attention. Within the lists are no specific order since it's just really hard to pick one over another because they might have a general theme related, but not necessarily the same overall feel.

Anime Mondays #25

One thing that keeps bugging me however are the references that show up EVERY episode especially the ones related to Revolutionary girl utena a magical girl show that feels eerily similar to penguin drum. Here are some similarities bettween penguin drum and other animes that i have found.

every episode himari transforms into the mysterious penguin lady, and they sing a song and have a whole video dedicated to her scene, much like the pre-fight cutscenes in Utena
